Next.js Powering This Site

Full Next.js support, no serverless caveats

Your app runs as a persistent Node.js server in the UK - so everything in the Next.js docs works the way the docs say it does.

App Router & Server Components

Full support for the Next.js App Router, React Server Components, server actions, and streaming responses.

SSR, ISR & API Routes

Server-side rendering, incremental static regeneration, and API routes all run on a persistent Node.js server - no function timeouts.

Git Push Deploys

Connect GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket. Every push to your production branch builds and deploys with rollback to any release.

Zero-downtime Deploys

New builds boot alongside the old release and take traffic only after health checks pass. No dropped requests.

Image Optimisation

next/image works out of the box - images are optimised on-server with sharp and cached on NVMe storage.

Encrypted Environment Variables

Per-environment env vars managed from the dashboard, encrypted at rest, never exposed in build logs.

NVMe Storage

Fast installs, fast builds, and a fast ISR cache. Every plan runs on NVMe SSDs.

Free SSL & DDoS Protection

Automatic certificates and network-level DDoS protection included on every plan.

Logs & Metrics

Live server logs, request metrics, CPU and memory graphs from the dashboard.

Technical specifications

We recommend the standalone output mode (output: "standalone" in next.config) for the smallest, fastest deploys - but a plain next build && next start works too.

Rendering

  • SSR on a persistent Node server
  • ISR with on-disk cache
  • Static export supported
  • Streaming & Suspense

Build

  • Standalone output mode supported
  • npm, pnpm & Yarn detection
  • Cached node_modules between builds
  • Node.js 20 / 22 / 24 LTS

Routing

  • App Router & Pages Router
  • API routes & route handlers
  • Middleware (runs on Node.js)
  • Custom domains, free SSL

Runtime

  • Long-running processes - no timeouts
  • WebSockets alongside your app
  • Environment variable management
  • UK London network routing

HostPanel vs Vercel, honestly

Vercel built Next.js and its platform is genuinely excellent - if you need per-PR previews or a global edge network, use Vercel. Choose HostPanel when you want UK data residency and a flat, predictable bill.

Per-seat feesNone - one price regardless of team size.Paid plans are priced per team member.
UK data residencyYes - your app runs in a London, UK datacentre.Global platform; compute and caching are not UK-specific.
Billing predictabilityNo usage-based charges - your bill is the same every month.Bandwidth, function, and image usage can add unexpected cost.
Preview deploymentsNo automatic per-PR previews yet - use a staging app instead.Excellent - every pull request gets its own preview URL.
Global edge networkSingle UK region - ideal for UK audiences, slower far away.Worldwide edge network with CDN caching close to every visitor.
Developer experienceStraightforward Git deploys, logs, and metrics.Best-in-class DX, deep Next.js integration from the company behind it.
Long-running work & WebSocketsPersistent Node server - WebSockets and long tasks just work.Serverless functions have execution limits; WebSockets need external services.

Honest gotchas before you switch

Self-hosting Next.js is well supported, but there are real differences from Vercel worth knowing up front.

No per-PR preview deployments

Vercel spins up a preview for every pull request; we don't yet. Most teams deploy a second HostPanel app from a staging branch instead - it works well, but it is one shared staging URL, not one per PR.

Single UK region, not a global edge

Serving from London is a feature if your users are in the UK and Europe - and a trade-off if they're in Sydney or São Paulo, where an edge network like Vercel's will be faster.

Middleware runs on Node.js, not an edge runtime

Next.js middleware executes on the server in front of your app. Behaviour matches the Node.js runtime; if your middleware relies on edge-specific APIs or geo-distributed execution, test before switching.

Image optimisation is on-server

next/image optimises via sharp on your instance and caches to NVMe. It counts towards your app's CPU rather than a separate image-optimisation service - fine for most sites, worth noting for image-heavy ones.
